Bench Love

Is this your image of Valentine's Day? Well, it definitely is not mine. My husband is not very romantic. He is not the hearts and flowers kind of guy who is going to write all over Facebook how much he loves his wife...blah...blah...blah! His idea of showing his love is to make sure my car has gas in it, clean up after dinner, fix things around the house. He is a guy who likes to be of service to others. Ask anyone in his life and they will all agree, he is the first to show up to help. He is the silent, steady rock that never wavers.

We had a bench out back for years and it got old and ugly and we replaced it with another one. Unfortunately, what seems to hold true these days, the newer one was made much more cheaply than the old one and wore out even faster. I noticed the bench on the side yard, the same one I had told him to take to the dump more than once, and said, "THAT'S what I want for Valentine's Day! Redo the old bench for me." It was really mangled, as you can see, but he set about taking it all apart, sanding, staining and painting it.
No job is as easy or simple as you expect and it took a lot of time and a lot of coats to try and save this thing. It didn't get done by Valentine's Day, but, finally, today, he got it all back together and put it in its spot out back.It looks great out there. It is a gentle reminder of our love...older, not new, seasoned, not perfect, but somehow, it still fits!
